SINCE STARTING AT PORT O’LEITH, ANNIE HAS MADE MASSIVE IMPROVEMENTS IN HER STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING. READ HER STORY BELOW

It started with the Boxing Basics Course in January 2022

I signed up for the Boxing Basics course because I was looking for a distraction from the unhealthy work/study/not-much-life balance I’d got myself into. I was near burnout when I got targeted by ads asking whether I wanted to learn how to box, so I figured why not, there’s nothing to lose. Three years later I can confidently say that joining Port O’Leith Boxing Club has been one of the nicest spontaneous decisions I have made.

The Boxing Basics course was fun and easy to follow. Yet it posed just enough of a challenge to clear my mind, and was a great workout. Even though I was a bit hesitant about learning something completely new (I had never worn boxing gloves, and it took me about a month to figure out how to wrap up), the atmosphere in the gym was so supportive yet relaxed that it was only natural to finish basics and keep going. I even met a few of my now closest friends in that basics class, all of whom are also still loyal Port O’Leith gym-goers.

Then what happened?

Since the gym offered a variety of classes throughout the day all week long, it was easy to sort out a gym routine that fit my schedule. Considering I had not done regular exercise in years, it was quite a big shift for me. I joined the occasional boxing class here and there, but I mainly spent my time either conditioning or attending a strength and power class. Support from the coaches was excellent, they taught me what correct form looks like and helped me feel comfortable and confident in the gym. But it was not only the coaches, the community also played a huge role. People around me were always incredibly supportive and empowering, they pushed me to work harder, lift heavier, squeeze out that one last rep. And when appropriate, collectively complain about burpees.

What’s the difference?

I feel the strongest and healthiest I have felt in a long time, and this is the first time that I genuinely enjoy going to the gym. I’ve gone from not really knowing what a deadlift is to deadlifting 135kgs. I’ve also gone from never having done a chest press to now chest pressing over half my body weight. It’s nice to see the physical changes, but it’s even nicer to be able to appreciate the endorphins and feel confident, even excited, about keeping up the progress.

What next?

Perhaps before the end of this year I’ll finally try out an advanced boxing class. But up until then I’m going to be working on those PBs, wondering why I’ve yet again signed up for a 7am red zone class and most importantly training in a way that feels fun and almost effortless.
